At a time when the world is opening up to the idea of more sustainable and immersive travel, the EuroVelo network is an irresistible invitation to discover Europe in a unique way. Far from the traditional tourist routes, this continental cycle route offers you a daring alternative for travelling across Europe. It’s a call to broaden your horizons, to get off the beaten track and follow cycle paths that become meanders of cultural exploration.
Let’s explore together the hidden treasures of the EuroVelo, where every kilometer reveals a new facet of European history:
The EuroVelo Network
The EuroVélo network represents an ambitious initiative to create a network of transcontinental cycle paths, stretching across the whole of Europe. Spearheaded by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), the project aims to link European countries by coherent, well-maintained cycle routes, offering an ecological and healthy alternative to traditional means of transport.
Launched in 1995, the EuroVelo network currently comprises 17 main routes, totaling over 90,000 kilometers of cycle paths and crossing 40 countries. Each route, distinctively numbered, offers a specific cycling experience, from the Atlantic coast to the shores of the Black Sea.
EuroVelo cycle routes for year-round travel
Due to its size and varied topography, Europe has a wide variety of climates. This means you can find favorable conditions for cycling all year round. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right cycle route for the seasons on the Old Continent:

An inspiring itinerary for travelling along the routes of the EuroVelo network
Vienna, Austria: for an Imperial start
The tour begins in magnificent Vienna, a city that bears the imprint of its imperial past. Cyclists will be seduced by the grandiose architecture of the Imperial Palace of the Hofburg and the winding alleys of the historic district. A must-see stop is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, testimony to centuries of history. Following the banks of the Danube, travelers will discover picturesque villages such as Dürnstein, where the blue church and fortress tell medieval tales.
Budapest, Hungary: through romantic landscapes of rivers and bridges
Leaving Austria, the Danube cycle route guides cyclists through Slovakia and Hungary, offering a romantic panorama formed by the river. The endless plains of Slovakia give way to the majestic mountains of Hungary. In Budapest, the pearl of the Danube, cyclists can marvel at the Hungarian Parliament lit up at night, cross the iconic Chain Bridge, and lose themselves in the charm of the thermal baths. Historic bridges, such as the Bridge of Liberties, link cyclists to the captivating history of this region.
Prague, Czech Republic: fairytales and enchanting landscapes
The Czech Republic welcomes travelers with its medieval cities and mystical castles. Cyclists pedal through towns steeped in history, such as Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where cobbled streets and colorful facades transport you to another time. Winding paths reveal secluded valleys, offering a natural escape from urban bustle. Every pedal stroke becomes an immersion in the tales and legends that have forged the Czech Republic.
The Rhine, Germany: for vineyards and friendly villages
EuroVelo 15, the Rhine Cycle Route, then guides cyclists along the Moselle into Germany, where the meandering Rhine reveals picturesque terraced vineyards. Villages with half-timbered houses and welcoming wine cellars invite travelers to take a well-deserved break. Wine lovers can enjoy Riesling, a white grape variety that thrives in the Rhine Valley, producing wines of incomparable elegance. Gewürztraminer, with its floral and spicy aromas, is also a delicious option to discover in German vineyards.
The Loire, France: enjoy a journey through time
EuroVelo 6, which winds along the Loire River in France, offers cyclists an immersion in the history of the great kings of France. The bucolic landscapes reveal emblematic châteaux, witnesses to different eras. In the 15th century, the end of the Hundred Years’ War under Charles VII and the influence of François I marked the French Renaissance, symbolized by the grandeur of Château de Chambord. The Loire Valley was also the playground of Louis XIV in the 17th century, the Sun King, whose magnificence is reflected in castles such as Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau.
Brittany, joining the ocean for a beautiful end to an adventure
The finale of this cycling epic is revealed on the Atlantic coast of Brittany along EuroVelo 4, where the warm welcome of the Bretons adds a human touch to this odyssey. Cyclists discover the beauty of Rennes, the regional capital, with its half-timbered houses and vibrant student atmosphere. Further west, Quimper reveals its medieval charm, while the corsair city of Saint-Malo boasts historic ramparts and breathtaking sea views. On the north coast, Roscoff captivates with its lively port and preserved architecture.
