EuroVelo 3, the Pilgrims Route

EuroVelo 3, the Pilgrims Route, is an emblematic route that winds its way through Europe, from Trondheim in Norway, via Santiago de Compostela in Spain to Cape Fisterra in Portugal. Covering some 5,600 kilometers across the continent. On this journey along EuroVelo 3, you’ll have the opportunity to discover some of Europe’s most famous pilgrimage routes.

The story of EuroVelo 3 begins with the emblematic figure of Olav Haraldsson, who became patron saint of Norway after his heroic death at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. His remains have become the focal point for pilgrims to Trondheim, Norway, through Scandinavia’s wilderness and historic sites. The route then extends through the wilds of Sweden, where it crosses the province of Bohuslän, renowned for its islands and granite cliffs. The cycle route then continues into Denmark through Jutland, following the ancient “Ox Road”. The medieval Danish town of Viborg welcomes travellers with its ancient churches and cobbled streets.

In Germany, EuroVelo 3 winds its way through a patchwork of landscapes, linking the North Sea to the castles of the Rhine, immersing cyclists in the region’s rich history. The route then crosses Belgium and its verdant valleys from the Meuse to the Sambre, before continuing into France. In France, baptized “La Scandibérique”, this section of EuroVelo 3 evokes the charm of river valleys, the majesty of the Loire castles and the intoxicating atmosphere of Gascony. It culminates at the foot of the Pyrenees, at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, where pilgrimage routes have crossed for centuries.

But it’s in Spain, as pilgrims approach Santiago de Compostela, that the atmosphere takes on a particularly spiritual dimension. The ancient pilgrimage trails, dotted with historic monuments and religious symbols, imbue the air with a mystical aura. The arrival at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where, according to tradition, the remains of the apostle James lie, marks the high point of this pilgrimage. Cyclists can continue their adventure as far as Cape Fisterra in Portugal, thus reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
