EuroVelo 14, Waters of Central Europe

Discover EuroVelo 14 Waters of Central Europe, a 1,150-kilometer cycle route that takes you from Zell am See in Austria to Debrecen in Hungary. Let yourself be charmed by the varied landscapes along rivers and lakes, and enjoy a unique cycling experience in the heart of Europe.

This journey begins in Zell am See, the starting point for a bucolic cycling adventure. Nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, this charming town offers impeccable rail links to majestic Salzburg, a land of culture and history. In Austria, where mountains melt into lush green valleys, the route stretches eastwards along the Tauern/Bischofshofen cycle path. At the junction with EuroVelo 7, the sunshine cycle route, the path changes, going deeper into the region’s natural wonders on the Enns Radweg/Schladming.

Panoramas stretch out, rivers murmur and lakes shimmer in the distance. From Liezen to St. Michael, it’s the Rastaland Radweg that guides cyclists, skilfully leading them along the paths to Graz. The capital of Styria welcomes them with its baroque charm and vibrant atmosphere. From here, cyclists take the Mostwärtsradweg before branching off onto the Raabtalradweg, plunging into rolling countryside dotted with welcoming villages.

The journey continues for a romantic trip to Hungary, with the opportunity to join EuroVelo 9, the Baltic-Adriatic Route. For the intrepid who continue along the lakes and rivers route, the immensity of Lake Balaton is revealed. Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake offers a welcome stopover, where you can relax in its soothing waters and explore its lively shores. Beyond the Hungarian border, the Őrség National Park unveils its unspoilt landscapes, where nature reigns supreme. The rolling hills of western Hungary roll by, dotted with picturesque villages, bountiful vineyards and comforting spas.

Then comes Budapest, the Hungarian capital, cradle of culture and nightlife, inviting travelers to lose themselves in its historic alleyways and relax in its famous thermal baths. The journey continues in harmony with Hungary’s high peaks, reaching Eger, guardian of a fortress steeped in history. Descending to endless plains, the Lake Tisza cycle path offers a final adventure, crossing the Hortobágy National Park to Debrecen, where the journey ends under the benevolent gaze of Hungary’s second most populous city.
