EuroVelo1, the Atlantic Coast Route

Welcome to EuroVelo 1, the iconic cycle route that winds its way through the landscapes and cultural gems of Atlantic Europe. Spanning more than 8,000 kilometers, this cycling route links the rugged northern coasts of Norway to the sunny beaches of Portugal, offering an experience for cyclists of all levels. The EuroVelo 1 route generally follows the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The journey begins in Norway, crossing the lands of the Sami people, where reindeer can be spotted along the roads. Tromsø, Senja, Andøya and Lofoten reveal majestic landscapes, with rugged mountains overlooking the ocean. Continuing south, the Helgeland coast marks the passage of the Arctic Circle, where the midnight sun gives way to persistent daylight in summer.

Then it’s on to the mystical lands of Scotland, where the Celtic Valleys offer an immersion in the Scottish countryside, coastline and towns. Aberdeen marks the start, followed by spectacular scenery along the Moray Firth, and the battlefield of Culloden recalls the country’s tumultuous history. The journey continues through the Irish wilderness on the Wild Atlantic Way, offering 2600 kilometers of wild and picturesque coastline, where Irish culture and natural beauty meet. Cyclists will have the opportunity to visit iconic sites such as the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands and the Dingle and Kerry peninsulas, offering breathtaking panoramas.

Then in France, on the Vélodyssée, which offers 1300 kilometers of signposted cycle paths, offering a unique experience along the French Atlantic coast, between Roscoff and Hendaye, through three regions and nine départements. Cyclists pass through historic towns such as La Rochelle and Nantes, along sandy beaches and picturesque salt marshes. The adventure continues in sunny Spain, where the ancient Roman road Ruta Vía de la Plata offers a journey through history, crossing from the south to the north of the Iberian peninsula. From Roman remains to natural and cultural treasures, this 800-kilometer route crosses four autonomous communities and seven provinces.

Finally, the Portuguese Algarve is home to the last traces of EuroVelo 1, offering over 200 kilometers of unspoilt coastline, from the Spanish border to Sagres. Dunes, rocky coves, vast sandy beaches and shallow lagoons dot this spectacular coastline, which enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year. Cyclists will also have the opportunity to discover the cultural and historical richness of cities such as Faro, Lagos and Lisbon, before finishing their journey in Valença.
