The story of the trip
Valentin Chapalain, Abicyclette Voyages travel consultant, has been passionate about Scandinavia since he was 8 years old. Since 2010, he has embarked on a number of Viking journeys. Through his many trips to Denmark and Sweden, many of them by bike, he is delighted to present and guide you through his most beautiful discoveries. He shares his passion for this country with you.
Cycling in Sweden and Denmark in the Öresund region
Explore southwest Sweden and eastern Denmark by bike. This cycling tour takes you through the charming fishing villages that dot the coast on either side of the Øresund Strait. This active vacation lets you enjoy the long beaches, small islands, wild landscapes and castles of this incredible destination. Välkommen till Sverige! Velkommen til Danmark! Welcome to the Öresund region, where the Baltic Sea meets the North Sea.
This trip to Viking lands is an opportunity to discover two countries in the same holiday: Sweden and Denmark. Cycling through the Öresund region means cycling along the Swedish and Danish coasts, between picturesque fishing villages, charming islands, bewitching beaches and wild landscapes. Discover the region’s 2 capital cities, Malmö (Sweden) and Copenhagen (Denmark). Rides through the heart of the two Öresund metropolises are an opportunity to cycle through the world’s most bike-friendly cities. Discover the region’s rich heritage, adding diversity to your Scandinavian adventure. Its safe itinerary, between greenways and small country roads, allows bike travelers to navigate with serenity.
The discovery of the Danish island of Seeland (Sjælland in Danish) is the first highlight of the adventure. Cycling along the Danish Riviera, find a string of beaches and charming seaside resorts, offering great swimming opportunities in the waters of the Öresund. The Jægersborg Dyrehave nature reserve offers the opportunity to cycle in the company of the resident fallow deer. In Helsingør, a visit to Kronborg Castle, the setting for Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, is a must. Listed by UNESCO, the castle is Scandinavia’s largest fortress. Museum-goers will find plenty to interest them in Humlebæk at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and the Karen Blixen Museum, famous Danish writer.
From Helsingør, you cross the Öresund Strait by boat to its Swedish twin, Helsingborg. You pedal along Sweden’s wild and varied coastline. The Kullaberg nature reserve forms an impressive rocky headland. This steep, forest-clad peninsula has to be earned. Your efforts will be rewarded. At the far end, near the Kullen lighthouse, the pink granite rocky spurs plunge into the sea, giving you a delightful coastal view. The Swedish coast is also dotted with pretty beaches that invite you to take a dip. Despite the latitude, the water temperature remains mild, between 17 and 20°C during the summer season. Perfect for cooling off after a day’s cycling. Small fishing villages such as Mölle, Arild, Råå and Borstahusen are flanked by picturesque, colorful huts where it’s a good idea to stop off before continuing your cycling tour.
The island of Ven marks an enchanted interlude in your Nordic escape. Nicknamed “the pearl of the Öresund”, this pretty island is a paradise for cyclists and walkers alike. No cars are allowed on this island, which rose from the sea over 7,000 years ago. Located off the coast of the Swedish town of Landskrona, the island of Ven boasts a varied and enchanting coastline, with steep cliffs and long white sandy beaches.
Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city in terms of population, is the departure and arrival point for this trip. Very cosmopolitan, Malmö is a pleasant city facing the Öresund strait. Malmö is often overshadowed by its Danish neighbor Copenhagen, which you’ll discover at the start of your trip.
50% of Copenhageners get around by bike every day. Cycling infrastructure is well thought-out. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself pedaling among a pack of cyclists! So do as the locals do and set off by bike to discover the Danish capital’s most emblematic landmarks: Nyhavn and its colorful quays, the Little Mermaid, Rosenborg Castle, the hippy Christiana district or Strøget, the city’s shopping thoroughfare.
In this region of Sweden and Denmark, gastronomy is all about the sea. Nothing beats locally caught mackerel, turbot or whiting. In Denmark, don’t miss one of the national dishes, the famous smørrebrød, a slice of dark bread topped with shrimp, smoked salmon, raw vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, etc., depending on your taste. On the sweet side, don’t miss the Kanelbullar, the famous cinnamon rolls found all over Sweden. And on a fine summer’s day, the locals love to enjoy an ice cream or hot dog and a cold beer by the sea. Skål!
From MALMÖ to HELSINGØR 50km 349m
Early in the day, take the train to Copenhagen with your bike (not included). Take advantage of the morning to explore the Danish capital. From the colorful quays of Nyhavn to those of Langelinie, home to the Little Mermaid, to Europe’s longest pedestrian thoroughfare Strøget. You leave Copenhagen to the north along the coast of the Øresund Strait. After Klampenborg, discover the Jaegersborg Dyrehave park, where you pedal through oak trees and, if you’re lucky, see the deer that live there. As you approach Helsingør, you wind your way along the Danish Riviera, with its charming villages (Rungsted and Humlebæk) and beautiful beaches. Two museums are well worth a visit: the Karin Blixen Museum in Rungstedlund and the Louisiana Museum in Humlebæk. End of the stage in the charming town of Helsingør.
From HELSINGØR to ARILD 40km 139m
Before leaving Helsingør, a visit to Kronborg Castle, known as the setting for Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, is well worth your while. Then take the ferry (20-minute crossing) back to Sweden after this pretty Danish detour. From the town of Helsingborg (Sweden), pedal north. Don’t miss Sofiero Castle and Arboretum, named Europe’s most beautiful in 2010.
The route continues to Höganäs and the magnificent rocky landscapes of the Kullahalvön peninsula. From the small village of Mölle, you can walk along the coastal path to Ransvik. The end of the stage takes you to the small seaside resort of Arild, where you spend the night. Before leaving Helsingør, a visit to Kronborg Castle, known as the setting for Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, is well worth your while. From ARILD to ÄNGELHOLM 36km 239m
You set off by bike on small gravel paths towards the Kullaberg nature reserve. The distance is short, although the profile is steep through fields and woods. But the scenery is sumptuous and well worth the effort.
We recommend a short 5 km hike to stretch your legs and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery. You return to Arild by the same route. Then pedal to Ängelholm on small roads and quiet greenways, never far from the sea.
From ÄNGELHOLM to HELSINGBORG 34km 132m
Between Ängelholm and Helsingborg, it’s an easy stage without too many hills, on greenways and small country roads. The route is bucolic, passing through fields and small villages such as Kattarp and Hittarp. Shortly before Helsingborg, you reach the Pålsjö forest nature reserve. It’s a great place for a walk. Arriving in Helsingborg on the seafront is pleasant by bike. If the weather is fine, take your time and enjoy a swim or a waffle by the sea.
At the end of the day, discover the pretty town of Helsingborg, with its lively quays and cobbled streets in the historic center.
From HELSINGBORG to ÎLE DE VEN 38km 240m
You leave Helsingborg and head south along the coast of the Øresund strait. The beginning of the route faces the sea and offers many views of the coast. The pretty fishing village of Råå is a good place to stop for the first time. Halfway up, you climb the hills of Glumslöv, an enchanting, undulating plateau formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. The panorama from the top is magnificent. Take the time to admire the view and catch your breath. The descent that follows takes you to Borstahusen, a fishing village founded in the 1770s. Then it’s on to the small town of Landskrona. It offers beautiful architecture and a wide range of cultural activities. In the center of town is
Citadellet, one of Sweden’s best-preserved 16th-century fortresses. From Landskrona, a 30-minute ferry takes you to the island of Ven. The tour of the island is a dozen kilometers long. The island of Ven is a paradise for cyclists and walkers, as there are no cars here. Pedal right out into the sea on wild little paths. A real treat before returning to your accommodation on the island of Ven.
Please note that there is very little accommodation on the island. If none are available on the island of Ven, you can stay at Landskrona.
From ÎLE DE VEN to MALMÖ 57km 183m
After breakfast, you reluctantly leave the island of Ven, heading for Landskrona by ferry. You continue southwards between sea and land. Barsebäckshamn, Lomma (Lomma beach) and Bjärred (Långa bryggan) are idyllic stops for a dip in the sea en route. Shortly before Malmö, Spillepengen is a popular bird-watching wetland.
You reach Malmö, where you spend the evening and night.
You can shorten your journey to 44 km by taking the train from Lomma to Malmö (ticket not included).
