La Régalante: A Cycling Route Designed for Pleasure
From Mont Saint-Michel to Nantes, a 275 km cycling journey to explore the historical, natural, and gastronomic heritage of the Marches of Brittany.
Set off on an adventure along the La Régalante cycling route, a unique experience between land and sea, guiding you from the legendary Mont Saint-Michel to Nantes. Along the way, you’ll pass through historic towns, picturesque landscapes, and indulge in delicious regional cuisine. Covering 275 km, this route offers a fresh perspective on Brittany and the Pays de la Loire, designed for nature lovers, heritage enthusiasts, and cycling aficionados alike.
Starting at Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll marvel at the “Wonder of the West.” A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this breathtaking landmark is simply unmissable. Be sure to visit the abbey perched at the top, an architectural masterpiece, and take in the mesmerizing sight of the tides from the medieval ramparts.
Throughout your journey, you’ll ride across the Marches of Brittany, a historic frontier that once separated the Duchy of Brittany from the Kingdom of France. This region, marked by centuries of battles and political struggles, was at the heart of conflicts between independent Brittany and its neighbors. The medieval fortress of Fougères, one of the largest in Europe, stands as a testament to this turbulent past, built to defend the region. Further along, Vitré, officially recognized as one of France’s most charming detours, captivates visitors with its half-timbered houses and well-preserved medieval heritage, reflecting the area’s strategic importance at the crossroads of France and Brittany.
Passing through Châteaubriant, you encounter remnants of the Middle Ages, including its fortified castle, a key piece of Brittany’s history. Finally, the charming town of Nort-sur-Erdre, nestled between canals and lush greenery, provides a peaceful retreat before reaching Nantes, a city rich in maritime, industrial, and cultural heritage. There, you can explore the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, the Fine Arts Museum, and the famous Machines de l’Île.
This journey is an immersive experience into the diverse landscapes of Eastern Brittany. From the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, you cycle through rolling countryside, dense oak and pine forests, and lush green valleys. The ride through the Erdre Valley offers spectacular views of what François I once called “the most beautiful river in France.” The route, primarily following quiet country roads and greenways, is a joy to ride—peaceful, lightly traveled, and lined with fields, meadows, and charming villages. Canals and ponds along the way, particularly near Châteaubriant and Nort-sur-Erdre, create a tranquil atmosphere where nature envelops you in serenity.
For food lovers, La Régalante is a true delight. Every section of the journey has its own culinary identity. From Mont Saint-Michel’s famous Mère Poulard omelette to the Ille-et-Vilaine specialty of galette saucisse with cider, or the pommé apple spread from the Fougères region, and the seafood and Muscadet wines of Loire-Atlantique, a feast of flavors awaits you. Don’t miss the local markets, where you can savor fresh regional products. Traditional restaurants and inns offer the perfect opportunity to enjoy these specialties, prepared with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
La Régalante is accessible to all, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced cyclist. The route is mostly flat or gently rolling, designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, far from busy roads. You can take your time, soak in the scenery, and pedal at your own pace with complete peace of mind. This cycling journey is a wonderful opportunity to rediscover the history, culture, and beauty of the regions it crosses. Whether you’re passionate about heritage, a nature enthusiast, or a foodie, La Régalante is an adventure to be savored fully, at your own rhythm. So hop on your bike and let yourself be swept away by the magic of this incredible journey from Mont Saint-Michel to Nantes!

La Régalante takes you first to La Meilleraye-de-Bretagne, a small village with a Cistercian abbey. Then continue through the Forest of Vioreau to Lac de Vioreau, perfect for a picnic stop or a refreshing swim. Passing through Joué-sur-Erdre, admire the agricultural landscape and quiet country roads. The route ends in Nort-sur-Erdre, where you can enjoy the banks of the Erdre, often considered one of the most beautiful rivers in France.
From NORT-SUR-ERDRE to NANTES 35km 96m
Lock 2 at Quiheix marks the end of the towpath on the Nantes-Brest Canal. This stage alternates between rural roads, sections of greenway and the charming port of Sucé-sur-Erdre, a cosy stop-off that is ideal for restoring your strength before reaching Nantes.
