The exhilarating colors and the beauty of the gardens of the Château de Villandry will plunge you into the heart of the 16th century. Following the direction of the current of the Indre you will arrive on Chinon and its 12th century fortress, which will welcome you for this stage.

From Saumur Castle, you advance through the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park. This territory, has six PDOs (Protected Designation of Origin), offers tastings in the freshness of troglodyte cellars and mushroom farms.

This circuit takes you on the tracks of Ronsard, Rabelais, Balzac … The valley has inspired many artists. It will not take you long to understand why. And maybe you too will find new inspiration here. On the banks of the Cher, Indre, Vienne and Loire, discover the wildest French rivers. 7 days by the water …

You then leave the Loire riverbanks and head South. Riding through vineyards and the forest, you reach Azay-le-Rideau, on the Indre riverbanks, another of the Loire’s tributary.

  • For a few more km 49km 204m Niveau Forme

Following the current along the Indre, you join the Loire. This surprising stage arouses your curiosity. Along the way, you’ll discover a château, a dovecote, a picturesque manor house and ancient water mills. This discovery of the secrets of the Loire Valley takes you as far as Rigny-Ussé, home to the castle of Sleeping Beauty. Finally, you turn south to Chinon and its fortress.

Day 4

From CHINON to SAUMUR 40km 230m Niveau Facile

The Vienne river, running through the village of Chinon, guides you to Candes-St-Martin, where it flows into the Loire. Labeled most beautiful villages in France, Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau are dazzling. The Touraine tuffeau offers luminous constructions. At the end of the day visit the Montsoreau Castle and the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud before reaching Saumur by the Loire riverbanks. A discovery of the city is a must! You will pass through a succession of ancient remains and characteristic old hamlets on your way to the Trélazé slate quarries, another local resource. About ten kilometres before Angers, cross the river Authion on the chain ferry at the port of La Chevalerie. A fun experience for young and old! Finally, you’ll head into the heart of the city to discover the old town of Angers, with its castle, Adam’s house and incredible cathedral.

The accommodation ranged from staying in an 11th century Abbey to 14th century hotel to a chic boutique style B&B and ALL places were amazing and close to town. The selected route and km to ride per day were enough considering stops at castels and lunch and just having enough time to be able to enjoy the moment along the route. This also gave us enough time when we arrived at our destination to explore the town and walk on foot to enjoy.

All in all it was a perfect trip and we rated it 10/10 so many thanks for everything and well organised.

05/2024
