Cycling in the heart of the Basque Country

From Bayonne, set off by bike to discover Basque traditions. Between majestic mountains, picturesque villages and the endless ocean, your pedal strokes will provide you with an unforgettable active holiday.

Immerse yourself in the heart of the French Basque Country with this unique cycling holiday, between sea and mountains. Over 8 days, and through 6 itinerant cycling stages, discover a captivating territory where nature, culture and traditions blend harmoniously. This adventure invites you to explore picturesque villages, cross varied landscapes and experience the authenticity of the Basque Country.

The cycling trip begins and ends in Bayonne, an emblematic city of the Basque Country. Its typical architecture, lively alleyways and historic heritage make it a pleasant stopover where you can enjoy the terraces and already feel like you’re on vacation. The cycle route forms a loop that takes you through green hills, fertile valleys and villages ranked among the most beautiful in France, such as La Bastide-Clairence and Sare.

Each day is a new discovery: from the spectacular scenery of the Pyrenean foothills to the peaceful banks of rivers, via emblematic towns such as Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The route has been designed to be accessible, with moderate stages and moments of relaxation to make the most of each place visited; as in Itxassou, a village renowned for its cherries and local gastronomy, nestled in a green setting ideal for relaxation. On the coast, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a historic fishing port, offers sandy beaches and lively lanes.

To complement your efforts, enjoy the gastronomic riches of the Basque Country. All along the route, you can savor local specialties: cheeses, charcuterie, pastries… A common denominator for many of the region’s products: a taste enhanced by the famous Espelette pepper. We recommend the traditional inns and farms that showcase the best of their ancestral recipes.

Pedal at your own pace, breathe in the scent of the meadows, hear the sound of the herds’ bells or admire the red roofs of Basque houses… This cycling trip is a wonderful sensory and cultural immersion. This cycling holiday in the Basque Country is an opportunity to discover an authentic and welcoming region, while enjoying a gentle and accessible physical activity. Let yourself be seduced by the beauty of the places, the richness of the encounters and the diversity of the experiences that await you.

The landscape becomes increasingly pastoral as you pass through the hamlets of Séquillon-de-Bas and Etxekolu, typical of the Basque Country. From Bellevue, open views stretch over the surrounding hills. After Maricoulé, the road descends toward the Ibarbure district, before reaching La Bastide-Clairence, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France.” Here, you’ll find timber-framed houses, an arcaded main square, and, on the outskirts of the village, the Benedictine Abbey and the Monastery of Sainte-Scholastique, peacefully set in the green Basque countryside.

After Ostabat-Asme, a listed pilgrimage site, the route follows small winding roads to Larceveau, then Cibits and Ainhice, where Labourdine houses and panoramic views of the Pyrenean foothills punctuate the progression. You then pass through the fortified village of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, rich in ancient history, before reaching Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. This medieval town, listed as one of France’s most beautiful villages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, is a landmark finish. Its cobbled streets, ramparts, Porte Saint-Jacques and lively old town make it an unmissable stopover at the foot of the Pyrenees.

As you drive through pastures and Basque hills, you soon come to the Pas de Roland road, bordered by a pretty low stone wall. You follow this gorge deep in the valley, where the Nive reveals its clear, lively waters. This picturesque road offers magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, and takes you to Itxassou, where you stop for the night.

The road then descends to Ainhoa, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” with its traditional Labourdine houses lined up along the main street. Continuing on, you pass through Dantxarinea and its ventas before reaching Zugarramurdi, known for its history linked to 17th-century witch trials.

You then cross Borne 63, marking the French-Spanish border, before arriving in Sare, also listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” with its half-timbered houses, central square, and pelota court.

From there, you join the Vélodyssée, which follows the Basque coastline. In Guéthary, a former fishing village turned seaside resort, the path offers wide views over the ocean. In Bidart, the route winds between cliffs and beaches. Next comes Biarritz, an elegant town famous for its seaside villas, the Rocher de la Vierge, and popular surf spots.
