Jutland Fjords and Funen Island by bike

Cycling from Odense to Aarhus for a Danish adventure between land and sea

The story behind the trip

Valentin Chapalain, Abicyclette Voyages travel consultant, has been passionate about Denmark and Scandinavia in general since he was 8 years old. Since 2010, he has embarked on a number of Viking journeys and knows every region of the country inside out:

  • Copenhagen, the capital,
  • the island of Fionie, the Garden of Denmark,
  • the Jutland peninsula and its splendidly varied coastline…

With 9 trips to Denmark to his credit, including several by bike, he is delighted to present and guide you through his most beautiful discoveries. He shares his passion for this country with you.

Funen Island and the east coast of Jutland by bike

From the town of Odense, on the island of Funen, discover the Danish coastline, crenellated by wooded fjords and wild beaches, all the way to Aarhus, the country's second-largest city.

Denmark is a country where the sea is never far away. Wherever you might be in Denmark, the sea is never more than 50 kilometers away! This tour on Danish soil links Odense on the island of Funen to Aarhus, the country’s second-largest city, on the Jutland peninsula. With stages ranging from 25 to 60 km, gently undulating terrain and well-designed cycling facilities, this cycling trip in Denmark is accessible to all levels. Denmark is a cycling country, and the cycling infrastructure reflects this. You pedal mostly on dedicated lanes or on small roads suitable for touring by bike.

Known as Denmark’s garden, Funen is the country’s 3rd largest island. Funen’s green, wooded countryside is peaceful and pleasant to cycle through. Along the way, on national route number 6, discover opulent manor houses and contemplate the cliffs of Røjle Klint near the Little Belt Strait (Lillebælt in Danish).

Cross the Little Belt Strait over a bridge to reach the Jutland peninsula. The eastern coast of Jutland is crenellated with wooded fjords and dotted with small islands. On the wooded shores of the Vejle and Horsens fjords, wild beaches invite you to swim.

Aarhus Bay boasts a coastline dotted with small ports and beaches, where you can pedal along beautiful coastal paths. Despite the latitude, the water temperature is pleasant, between 17 and 20°C in summer. Ideal for cooling off during a cycling stage. You can enjoy an is (ice cream) or a pølse (hot dog sausage), or toast with a chilled øl (beer) in one of the refreshment stands set back from the beach. Skål!

Jutland is also an undulating countryside, colored by fields of barley and rapeseed, and occupied by beautiful, quiet villages with remarkable thatched cottages.

Odense, Denmark’s third-largest city in terms of population, is the starting point for this trip. Odense is best known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark’s most famous novelist and storyteller, author of The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and The Little Match Girl, among others. The cobbled streets of the picturesque district where Andersen was born in 1805 are ideal for family strolls. At the end of your stay, head for Aarhus, the country’s second-largest city. A dynamic metropolis by the sea, Aarhus was crowned European Capital of Culture in 2018.

Day 1

ODENSE

Arrive on your own in Odense, the main city of the island of Funen and birthplace of the famous novelist Hans Christian Andersen. Retrieve your bikes and enjoy the evening in Odense.

Day 2

From ODENSE to MIDDELFART 65km Niveau Forme

You leave Hans Christian Andersen’s birthplace heading east. Cycle along the National Cycle Route 6 for the entire stage. Without any notable difficulty, the route gives you a glimpse of the countryside on the island of Funen. Gentle hills, forests, thatched cottages and manor houses.
At the end of the stage, you reach the Little Belt strait that separates the island of Funen from the Jutland peninsula. The strait is famous for its porpoises. Before reaching Middelfart, we recommend a short detour to the Strib Fyr lighthouse and the cliffs of Røjle Klint. In Middelfart, we recommend a visit to Henner Friisers Hus, one of Denmark’s most beautiful half-timbered houses.

Day 3

From MIDDELFART to VEJLE 55km Niveau Forme

At the start of the stage, you cross the Little Belt strait. You reach the small coastal town of Fredericia. Then you follow the coastline towards the Vejle fjord. The route is bumpy and wooded. You’re pedaling through one of Denmark’s most hilly regions. Through the beech forests, beautiful panoramas of the fjord reward your efforts. At the end of the stage, you reach the town of Vejle. Nestling deep in the fjord, Vejle is the birthplace of footballer Allan Simonsen, Denmark’s only ever winner of the Golden Ball. Vejle is also famous for its windmills and wave-shaped residential buildings: Bølgen.

Day 4

From VEJLE to HORSENS 45km Niveau Forme

The ride out of Vejle is a sporty one, with a nice climb to get you going. The rest of the stage takes you through the countryside, between forest and fields. The slightly undulating profile offers views of the sea, which is never far away.
Today’s cycle path, inland, is partly undulating and surrounded by forest.
Vitus Bering is the celebrity of the town of Horsens where you’re staying tonight. In the 18th century, he sailed across the Bering Strait, which bears his name, between North America and Asia. The Horsens municipal park pays tribute to him.

Day 5

From HORSENS to ODDER 60km Niveau Forme

From Horsens, you continue northwards. Today’s stage is very coastal. The Kattegat Sea on your right. You also catch a glimpse of the small islands lying offshore. Along the wooded coastline, numerous wild beaches invite you to take a swim. Why not take a dip on the way?
At the end of the stage, you reach the town of Odder, where you spend the night.

Day 6

From ODDER to AARHUS 25km Niveau Facile

Today’s stage is deliberately short. You have the opportunity to discover Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city. Situated at the head of its bay, Aarhus is a lively, culture-focused city. In fact, Aarhus was the European Capital of Culture in 2018.

If you prefer nature, there are plenty of beaches where you can splash about and relax on the way.
