Germany by bike along the Danube in Bavaria
Cycle along the majestic banks of the Danube, between Donauworth and Passau, for an immersive adventure in the heart of Germany. Embark on a cycling epic on Eurovélo 6, along the Danube through Bavaria, where every pedal stroke reveals a landscape of timeless beauty.
This picturesque cycling tour offers an enchanting mix of river landscapes, historic towns and architectural treasures. From Donauworth to Passau by bike, you cycle peacefully through charming stopover villages, along panoramas that offer views of the beauties of the Danube River. They make for an unforgettable cycling getaway.
You set off from the charming town of Donauworth and its historic quarters. Ride along the banks of the Danube, discovering architectural treasures such as the old fortress of Ingolstadt, splendid Regensburg with its Gothic accents, and the Mediterranean atmosphere of Passau.
Your cycling route on the EuroVelo 6 also offers moments of contemplation of nature. It’s delightful to observe the Danube making its way through the rock in Kelheim or meandering peacefully through the Bavarian forest.
Between bike rides, take time to visit iconic sites such as Valhalla and the Liberation Hall. Every day brings its share of warm encounters, local culinary delights and awe-inspiring experiences. In Passau, where the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers converge in an aquatic dance, the spectacle is breathtaking.
An adventure that combines the historical richness of the cities we pass through with the natural splendor of the Danube, making this journey a memorable experience.
From ONAUWÖRTH to INGOLSTADT 65km 320m
You pedal along paths through the foothills of the Franconian Alb to Neuburg, where it’s a good idea to take a stroll through the charming old town or visit the castle, which dominates the town magnificently.
Today’s destination is Ingolstadt, with its ancient fortifications. This is also where the Bavarian Beer Purity Law was passed over 500 years ago.
From INGOLSTADT to KELHEIM 60km 400m
As far as Bad Gögging, you follow the river almost all the way through the Danube meadows.
A little further on, Mother Nature has a surprise in store for you: the Danube Gap at Weltenburg Monastery, where the river cuts through massive Jura rocks.
Refuel in the monastery brewery before taking the boat to Kelheim. Depending on the accommodation booked, you can also spend the night in Abensberg and catch the boat the following day.
From KELHEIM to REGENSBURG 39km 253m
Start your journey along the old Roman road in Kehlheim, exploring the historic center before heading for Regensburg. Along the Danube, discover picturesque landscapes until you reach the old town of Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire St. Peter’s Cathedral, the clock tower of the former town hall and the picturesque corbelling of the Imperial Hall, all witnesses to a rich history.
From REGENSBURG to STRAUBING 55km 416m
The Danube makes its way gracefully through the vast expanse of countryside, and you pedal alongside it, along the edge of the Bavarian forest, dotted with romantic wine villages and unspoilt nature reserves. Take a short break at the Walhalla, built by King Ludwig I, before setting off for your destination of the day, Straubing, capital of the Gäuboden region.
Every year in summer, Gäubodenfest is celebrated here.
From STRAUBING to DEGGENDORF 42km 33m
Shortly after setting off, you reach Bogen, famous for the discovery of a statue of the pregnant Madonna. Continuing on, you pass through Pfelling and Mariaposching to finally arrive at the gateway to the Bavarian Forest: Deggendorf, where Gothic and Baroque characterize the old town.
From DEGGENDORF to PASSAU 55km 380m
Today’s itinerary includes the historic little town of Vilshofen, which you may have heard about when CSU President Strauss made a speech there. You soon reach your destination, the three-river town and former diocesan city of Passau, via Niederalteich, Hofkirchen and Windorf. Before that, there are historic sites to discover, such as the Winzer castle ruins and unspoilt nature in the “Donaualtwasser Winzerer Letten” protected area.
Let your day be rounded off with a stroll through Passau’s old town.
