From Dijon to Chalon sur Saône between vineyards and valleys

From Dijon, start a 7-day cycling trip in the heart of the great vineyards of Burgundy. This region will soon have no more secrets for you.

This cycling trip starts in the beautiful city of Dijon with its varied and rare architecture. Take advantage of your arrival in the historical capital of the duchy of Burgundy to stroll through its streets and taste some local specialties.

The urban landscape quickly gives way to the fresh air of the countryside. Throughout your stay, you have the opportunity to stop in the different vineyards on your way and taste the Grands Crus of Burgundy. Land of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties, this oenological journey is a joy for wine lovers but also initiates the curious who wish to learn more. The Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Beaune appellations are in the spotlight during these 7 days of cycling. You will ride safely on itineraries with grandiose panoramas. The Voie des vignes, as its name indicates, guides you through the heart of the prestigious Burgundy vineyards. The villages crossed promise beautiful discoveries and tastings in Pommard, Meursault, Puligny Montrachet or Vosne-Romanée. With the help of this greenway, you pedal along the vineyard paths and the Climats of Burgundy listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (In Burgundy, a Climat is a delimited parcel of land with its own geological characteristics and vines of a single variety).

This bicycle trip also offers other surprises. At the bend of the vineyards, you will discover enchanting castles, peaceful villages full of flowers, and impressive properties and estates that make the richness of the region. You will stop in Beaune, a famous city with cobblestone streets, internationally known for its hospices and its annual wine auction. You can visit some of the many historical monuments along your cycling route. We particularly recommend the Château de Corabœuf, a precious testimony of the region’s past; and the La Ferté Abbey which plunges you into the heart of the 18th century.

This journey reveals many secrets that each actor, medieval village, wine estate shares with you out of love for its history, its land and its region, out of pride in its culture and traditions. By its generosity and its welcome, Burgundy quickly makes you one of its new ambassadors and already invites you to a new cycling adventure.

Day 2

DIJON 52km 304m Niveau Loisir

Leaving Dijon, you follow the Burgundy Canal cycle route, lined with locks and typical lock houses. The flat, shady route takes you along the calm waters of the canal to Pont-de-Pany. Make a short stop at Lac de Bir to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before returning to Fleurey-sur-Ouche. You then leave the canal to climb towards Mâlain, where the ruins of a medieval castle dominate the valley. The route then passes through Ancey and Lantenay, offering fine panoramic views of the Auxois hills. The descent to Velars-sur-Ouche leads back to the canal, where the greenway takes you leisurely back to Dijon.

For a shorter alternative, turn around at Pont de Pany and return via the canal on the same road.

Day 3

From DIJON to BEAUNE 52km 338m Niveau Loisir

Leaving from Dijon, this route quickly plunges you into the world of Burgundy’s great wines. You’ll travel along the first hillsides of the Côtes de Nuits, past villages with evocative names: Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot and its emblematic château, witness to the monastic history of the vineyards. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, the beating heart of the local wine industry, a stopover is a must to discover its cellars and heritage. Continuing on to the Côte de Beaune, you pass through rolling countryside where the vines stretch as far as the eye can see. The route takes you to Aloxe-Corton, famous for its grands crus, before reaching Beaune, former city of the Dukes of Burgundy. Stroll through its narrow streets and don’t miss its wine museum, which traces the region’s wine-growing history.

Day 4

BEAUNE 65km 966m Niveau Forme

This magnificent loop to the southwest of Beaune takes you to the heights of the region’s vineyards.
You will quickly reach the wine village of Pommard and take the direction of the cliffs of Saint-Romain offering a breathtaking view on the vineyards of the Côtes de Beaune. With a little luck you will see peregrine falcons nesting on these cliffs.
You then ride towards the Cirque du bout du monde with its spectacular rocky slopes carved by the Cozanne river into the limestone. Before returning to Beaune, don’t hesitate to add a stop to visit the Château de Corabœuf, a classified historical monument.

Day 5

From BEAUNE to CHALON-SUR-SAÔNE 45km 270m Niveau Loisir

You leave Beaune and its hospices in the direction of Chalon-sur-Saône, the world cradle of photography.
The itinerary leads you to the discovery of the vineyards of the Côtes de Beaune which includes Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chagny, Pommard or Santenay. On the program of this day: visits of cellars and authentic villages, gourmet breaks in the vineyards and panoramas on the mountains of Burgundy.

Day 6

Today, you ride south of Chalon sur Saône on this loop which leads you to the imposing La Ferté Abbey. You can visit the abbey palace with its interior dating from the 18th century as well as its English-style park in the middle of hundred-year-old trees.
